How to pick a cleanser that's right for you

Cleanser. It's perhaps the least sexy of all skincare steps, but that doesn't mean that it's not important.

In fact, choosing the right cleanser for you is a vital exercise. You want something that will wash away a day's worth of grime, dirt, pollution and make-up without upsetting the skin's delicate moisture balance, or causing any other adverse effects for that matter.

The problem is, like all other skincare products, there are just so many different cleansers out there, making the decision of which cleanser to use particularly tricky. Helpfully, one of Lion/ne's longest-standing Skin Mentors, Claudia, shares her take on all things cleansing...

A good cleanser is probably one of the most important steps in your routine (alongside SPF of course!). Having the right cleanser can help to not only balance the skin but also can prepare your skin for the next products in line. Primarily, cleansing is to help rid the skin of the day’s grime and bacteria, but it’s what prepares the skin to absorb all the other active and hydrating ingredients you apply on top.

The exact cleanser you use, however, well, that’s totally dependent on your skin type and Skin Mood™. Some faces will get on better with gently foaming gel formulas, while others will love balms, oils and milks.

Typically speaking, dry skin does respond better to creamy and milky cleansers as these are less likely to irritate and strip the skin. That being said, if you are dealing with breakouts it may be useful to incorporate a cleanser that contains gentle exfoliants such as poly-hydroxy acids, alpha-hydroxy acids or one of the most popular ingredients salicylic acid.

With skin that is prone to oiliness and breakouts, it is important to use a gel or gentle, non-stripping cleanser that will help to rid the skin of any extra oil that may be contributing to the breakouts.

The only real way to understand which cleanser is right for you and which brands actually work? Speaking to your own Skin Mentor. They'll analyse your skin and come up with a recommended routine suited to your unique skin.
