To supplement or not to supplement?

To supplement or not to supplement?

If your algorithm is anything like ours, then you’re bound to come across videos of supplement routines and rituals every single day on TikTok. But do you actually need to take any supplements to benefit your skin? Will they actually do anything to your complexion? Let’s dig a little deeper.

Before you start taking anything, as well as consulting your doctor, it’s important to first learn about your unique skin. What works for your favourite influencer won’t always work for you, and anything you apply to your skin – or take for it – should be carefully selected to suit your personal Skin Mood™. (Don’t worry: we can help you figure that out).

We also believe that as a first port of call, you should always look to counteract any deficiencies with your diet. Great nutrition is the cornerstone of your skincare routine, after all. But beyond that, which are the best supplements to take for your skin? Here are a few of our favourites:

ZINC (10-30mg)

Zinc works as an antioxidant to ward against damaging free radicals, and it helps to heal and rejuvenate skin. It’s also thought to help reduce acne flare-ups.

TURMERIC

Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory to ward off oxidative stress caused by things in our environment and is believed to help support the immune system.

EVENING PRIMROSE OIL

These supplements are great to gently fight against breakouts as well as other types of inflammation such as eczema and dermatitis.

FATTY ACIDS

Omega-3 and -6 are essential fatty acids that the human body can’t make on its own, so we need to supplement them through our diet. There is some evidence to suggest they help reduce skin inflammation.

PRO- AND PREBIOTICS

These are live active cultures that help feed the good bacteria in our gut and on our skin. This is helpful to maintain general skin health, and also aid skin conditions such as rosacea, acne and atopic dermatitis.
