Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Chemical Peels… Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?

Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Chemical Peels… Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?

We know that the word “acid” might send shivers down your spine, but these ingredients shouldn’t be feared by your skin as they can work wonders! Glycolic Acid for example is part of the AHA (Alpha-Hydroxy Acid) family. It may seem scary, but AHA’s are nothing to be afraid of, because these acids are, in many cases, actually more gentle than using a traditional scrub to exfoliate!

Rather than scrubbing off dead skin cells, AHAs can be used to gently dissolve dead cells from the top layer of the skin. They can have benefits like reducing fine lines, evening out skin texture, reduce acne scarring, and improving the appearance of pigmentation - therefore are a treat for your skin rather than a trick.

However, it can easily become a nightmare for those with sensitive skin if used too frequently or in a high concentration. Thankfully, there is a whole category dedicated to those with delicate skin. In fact, Poly-Hydroxy Acids (PHAs), the second generation of AHA’s, are very gentle and best for dry, reactive, skin.

BHAs (Beta-Hydroxy Acid) such as salicylic acid are oil-soluble, and can penetrate through to our pores alongside working on the surface of the skin. These are perfect for those dealing with oily skin or oily T-Zone. Going deeper into the pores, BHAs are more effective than scrubbing the skin with physical exfoliants to regulate oil control, blackheads, and congestion.

At-home peels are less powerful than going to an aesthetician or beauty therapist. They only act on the outer layer of the skin, and are legally not allowed to be sold on the high street if they penetrate past the top layers of the skin. These peels are perfect for general skin maintenance and can boost your overall skincare regime. They do this by improving product absorption, which maximises their benefits. However, don’t forget that each acid has different benefits, which needs to be considered in conjunction with your skin type, condition, and mood.
