Antioxidants have had a Rebrand: the Anti-Pollution trend is here to stay!

Antioxidants have had a Rebrand: the Anti-Pollution trend is here to stay!

It started as a trend, but now has become a necessity in every bathroom shelf of city gals and guys! We have recently started to become more and more aware of the impact pollution has on the world, and for the purposes of this post, our skin. Looks like we have a new ‘skinemy’ (get it?) to add to our list. Pollution causes free-radical damage that can lead to premature ageing and dull/lacklustre skin. Free-radicals are unstable molecules that deplete the skin’s barrier function by stealing electrons and causing oxidative stress to the skin.

ANTI-POLLUTION SKINCARE - PROS

The air pollution is increasing year by year. Therefore, having ‘anti-pollution’ products is even more essential to ensure that your skin is fully protected! There were already products on the market that ensured this type of protection, but were not labelled with the ‘anti-pollution’ label until now (they are products high in antioxidants!). Therefore, this trend is a major pro, as it makes it a bit easier to understand how to protect- one instance where we are here for the marketing.

ANTI-POLLUTION SKINCARE - PROS

On the flip side, just because a product says ‘anti-pollution’ doesn’t mean it contains the right cocktail of ingredients to protect your skin! Therefore, reading the product’s formulation is key to understanding the efficacy of your product and its strength. Plus, choosing the right antioxidant needs to be done according to your skin health & state not because you read somewhere ‘anti-pollution’!

BRANDS THAT ARE EMBRACING THIS TREND

The Ordinary: The Ordinary is one of our favourites, not only for their prices that make our wallet happy, but also because of their wide variety of antioxidants to choose from. Just because the label doesn’t have ‘anti-pollution’ doesn’t mean it will not protect your skin!

Chantecaille: Chantecaille has different primers that help to boost skin’s protection throughout the day. Their anti-pollution primer contains ingredients that act as a shield and is one of Megan’s favorite products. They were one of the first brands to champion anti-pollution so hats off to them!

Skinceuticals: Classic, we all know that SkinCeuticals is the brand to go to if you are in need of a powerful antioxidant to protect your skin!
